Let’s first understand What exactly G.P. Rating is?
G.P. Rating Stands for General Purpose Rating Course. This is a six months long residential course which will familiarize you with the basics of board ships operations which are as follows:
Introduction to shipping industry, Deck & Engine department of the Ship, Maintenance & operation of machineries, Ship familiarization, F&B services, F&B production, Customer care service, Guest handling, Housekeeping, Front office operation & management, Life saving appliances, Survival at Sea, Swimming, Personality development, English & Computer etc.
Admission Procedure, Age Limitation, Eligibility Criteria and Medical Fitness :
You do not have to clear any CET(Common Entrance Test) to apply for GP Rating course. You can directly apply for the admission in the institutes providing training for this course, but Institutes do have their own selection criteria which might be Written Test or an Interview.
Age Limit: Candidate should be between 17.5 to 25 years old.
1. Candidate should have passed 10th standard with a minimum aggregate of 40% from any recognized Board with mathematics and science as subjects.
2. Candidate must have 40% marks in English subject in either 10th, 12th or diploma/degree exam.
3. Candidate should be able to speak and comprehend English
Height: 5.5 Feet
Weight: 48 Kg.
Vision: No Color Blindness is permitted, 6/6 Vision in both eyes, No Eye Glasses permitted.
GP Rating is good choice available to join Merchant Navy after 10th standard. It is just like an entry level course to Merchant Navy after the completion of this course you can get the post of Trainee Seaman or Engine or Deck based on your interests.
This course meets the minimum qualification requirements to become a Merchant Navy Sailor.
Job Description of GP Rating, Deck Rating & Engine Trainee:
Initially the candidate has to start as “Trainee Seaman”, “Trainee Wiper (Engine)”, “Trainee Ordinary Seaman(Deck)”. Later on you may reach till Able Bodied Seaman(Deck) or Motorman(Engine). If you possess technical and supervisor knowledge than you might become Pump Man, Fitter or Bosun in near future.
Usually trainees on ship do not have any responsibility and most of the time they work under the supervision of an Able Seaman/Bosun or Engineers.
Job description of Deck Rating: Deck Maintenance, Cleaning Accommodation, Deck Maintenance, Cargo Operations and following the instructions of supervisors time to time.
Engine Trainee job description: Cleaning the Engine Room and assisting the supervisors when required.
Certifications: After completing the training successfully, the course certificate are issued by the institute which is approved by Ministry of Surface and Transport, Director General of Shipping and Govt. of India. Additionally the candidate shall be awarded with INDOSJ & Indian CDC(Continuous Discharge Certificate).
The Candidate After completions of pre-sea training Courses has to Sail or undergo On-board training for a minimum period of 18 Months or more. A competent person can rise to the level of Master mariner on board a merchant ship after required sea time and passing various exams.
